USD Weakens into Month-End; Equities Close on a Positive Note

Forex Market 

 

USD: Weaker on Data, Month-End Flows in Focus
The USD slipped into the weekend as softer sentiment and mixed U.S. data weighed on the greenback. Core PCE for August printed at +0.3% m/m and +2.9% y/y, in line with expectations, while Personal Income (+0.4%) and Spending (+0.6%) both beat estimates. Canadian GDP also surprised to the upside at +0.2% m/m and +0.9% y/y.

 

  • EUR/USD climbed to 1.1707 after U.S. data, finishing the week near 1.1704.
  • GBP/USD advanced through 1.3400 to highs of 1.3413.
  • USD/JPY drifted lower, touching 149.41 before recovering, last near 149.47.
  • AUD/USD traded in a 0.6521–0.6551 range, closing firm near 0.6550.
  • NZD/USD rose to 0.5784, last seen at 0.5772.
  • USD/CAD dipped to 1.3932 following strong GDP data, before closing near 1.3958.
  • DXY softened to 92.15 lows, down from highs of 98.53 earlier in the week. 

 

 

AUD: Supported but Capped

AUD/USD traded in a tight 0.6521–0.6551 range to finish the week, closing firm near 0.6550. Month- and quarter-end flows are expected to dominate the start of the week, with demand seen at the 100 DMA of 0.6520 and selling interest likely to emerge toward 0.6575.

  • Nikkei -0.9% to 45,355
  • Shanghai Comp -0.7% to 3,828
  • Hang Seng -1.4%
  • ASX 200 managed gains of +0.2% to 8,788, supported by financials and materials.
 
Europe
Markets closed firmer into the weekend:
  • FTSE +0.8% to 9,285
  • DAX +0.9% to 23,739
  • CAC +1.0% to 7,871
  • Stoxx +0.5%

 

U.K. 10-year Gilts traded at 4.73%

  • US Data – Core PCE matched expectations; Personal Income/Spending both beat.
  • Canada GDP – July +0.2% m/m, +0.9% y/y (vs. +0.1% / +0.7% est.).
  • Japan CPI – Ex-food & energy slowed to +1% y/y, soft inflation momentum.
  • U. Michigan Sentiment – Revised lower to 55.1, inflation expectations edged down.
  • Trump Headlines – Suggested progress on Gaza, reiterated U.S. economic strength, hinted at possible government shutdown. Later comments suggested openness to lifting restrictions on U.S. weapons use in Russia.
  • Equities – Wall St. higher into the weekend; Europe also firmer.
  • Oil – WTI +1.1% to US$65.70/bbl; Brent $69.36/bbl.
