USD Surges as Fed Holds Rates Amid Geopolitical Tensions; AUD Slides
The U.S. dollar strengthened broadly overnight as geopolitical tensions in the Middle East escalated and the Federal Reserve held rates in a divided decision. Safe-haven demand, rising oil prices, and higher U.S. yields supported the USD, while risk-sensitive currencies like AUD and NZD weakened. Despite mixed economic data, markets leaned defensive, keeping FX volatility elevated.
AUD/USD traded lower throughout the session, retreating from earlier highs, while NZD/USD also declined. EUR/USD and GBP/USD weakened, pressured by USD strength and softer European equities. USD/JPY pushed higher, reflecting yield differentials and continued yen weakness, while USD/CAD remained volatile following the Bank of Canada’s hold decision.
