USD Softens as Asian FX Strengthens; AUD Advances on better Regional Sentiment
The U.S. dollar traded broadly lower through midweek as improving sentiment across Asian markets and renewed optimism around regional currency revaluation weighed on safe-haven demand. Market participants were encouraged by growing expectations that Asian policymakers may tolerate firmer local currencies to support capital inflows, following recent commentary highlighting the Chinese yuan’s perceived undervaluation and upgraded medium-term forecasts. The softer greenback backdrop has supported higher-beta currencies, with the Australian dollar extending gains as investors rotated back into risk-sensitive assets amid easing immediate geopolitical concerns and stabilising commodity markets. Westpac noted that while volatility remains elevated, broader FX price action suggests investors are increasingly positioning for a gradual shift away from peak U.S. dollar exceptionalism.

Asian markets also drew support from improving regional trade resilience and energy security developments, with Thailand’s accelerated efforts to diversify crude import sources helping to reduce supply-side concerns linked to Middle East instability. Meanwhile, resilient performance in Israel’s shekel despite persistent geopolitical tension has reinforced broader confidence in select emerging-market FX, underscoring the market’s preference for structural fundamentals over short-term headlines. Equity markets responded positively, with technology and AI-linked sectors leading gains as lower energy price expectations and easing inflation pressures revived appetite for growth assets. This constructive risk backdrop has helped lift the AUD toward fresh highs, though traders remain alert to central bank commentary and any renewed geopolitical escalation that could quickly reverse sentiment.
