USD Firms as CAD Retail Sales Miss; Equities End Week Higher

Forex Market 

USD: Steady with Data & Headlines
The USD traded mixed to firm into the week’s close. No major U.S. data releases, though Canadian Retail Sales for July matched forecasts at -0.8% MoM, while the core measure slipped -1.2% vs. -0.6% expected. The USD strengthened broadly in response.
  • EUR/USD fell to 1.1729, touching lows of 1.1751 during the Asian session.
  • GBP/USD slipped to 1.3464 after trading near 1.34825 earlier.
  • USD/JPY climbed to highs of 148.27.
  • USD/CAD rose to 1.3825 in early NY trade before easing back to 1.3769 into the close. 
AUD: Narrow & Steady
AUD/USD traded between 0.6586 and 0.6619. The pair briefly touched session lows of 0.6586 before recovering to settle near 0.6600 into the New York close. Resistance is seen at 0.6670, while demand holds firm above 0.6500.

Wall Street
Wall St. ended the week in positive territory:

• Dow Jones +0.4%

• S&P 500 +0.5%

• Nasdaq +0.7%  The U.S. 10-year yield ticked up to 4.13%, while WTI crude slipped 1.4% to US$62.68/barrel.

 

Asia-Pacific
Asian equities were mixed:

• Shenzhen +0.1%

• Hang Seng flat

• Nikkei -0.6%

Locally, the ASX 200 gained +0.3%, led by Technology and Healthcare (both +0.9%). AUD/USD traded in a tight 0.6588/0.6619 range.

 

Europe

European equities were mostly flat to mildly higher:

• CAC +0.3%• DAX -0.2%

• FTSE flat

• Stoxx flat, U.K. 10-year Gilts were offered to 4.7%. Brent crude edged -0.3% lower to US$67.15/bbl.

Headlines to Watch

  • Trump–Xi Call – Both sides described the discussion as “constructive,” with a potential meeting at the APEC Summit.
  • Fed Outlook – Governor Miran downplayed inflationary risks from tariffs, noted policy is far from neutral, and pledged to explain his dissent on Monday.
  • Canadian Retail Sales (Jul) – Headline matched forecasts at -0.8% m/m, though core sales fell -1.2% vs. -0.6% expected.
  • Oil Prices – WTI crude slipped -1.4% to US$62.68/barrel, while Brent crude eased -0.3% to US$67.15/bbl.
