Markets steady as risk sentiment finds a footing; NZD outperforms on inflation surprise

Global markets traded cautiously overnight as investors balanced easing geopolitical concerns against firmer U.S. yields and a generally stronger U.S. dollar. Equity markets delivered mixed performances, with Wall Street finishing little changed after early gains faded, while European shares also ended mixed. Oil prices initially climbed before retreating after reports of a potential temporary pause in Middle East hostilities, helping improve broader risk sentiment. The Australian dollar briefly pushed above 0.7000 before settling near that level into the Asian open, while China’s decision to leave its benchmark lending rates unchanged reinforced expectations of continued policy stability.
The New Zealand dollar outperformed its peers after stronger-than-expected inflation data reinforced expectations that domestic price pressures remain persistent. The higher inflation reading reduced expectations of near-term monetary easing and supported the currency against both the U.S. dollar and Australian dollar. Elsewhere, softer Canadian inflation had only a modest market impact, while major currency pairs remained largely range-bound as investors awaited fresh catalysts. Looking ahead, markets remain focused on inflation trends, central bank expectations, and developments surrounding Middle East negotiations, which continue to influence commodity prices, bond yields, and overall risk appetite.
