USD Firm as Data Mixed; AUD Steadies After CPI Surprise
Currency markets were mostly stable overnight as mixed U.S. economic data kept the dollar supported, while the Australian dollar steadied following softer-than-expected inflation. U.S. bond yields eased and oil prices declined, contributing to cautious sentiment across risk assets. The Australian dollar initially weakened after local inflation came in below expectations, but later recovered as markets reassessed the data. In Europe, the euro and sterling softened on weaker German retail sales and broad U.S. dollar strength, before finding some support after Eurozone inflation met forecasts. In North America, the Canadian dollar edged lower amid softer energy prices and mixed labour indicators, while the New Zealand dollar advanced to fresh session highs. By the close of the New York session, major currency pairs remained range-bound, with the U.S. dollar holding a modestly firmer tone against most counterparts.
