USD: Wall St. Falters on Bank Fears; AUD Slips on Jobs Data

Wall Street ended sharply lower overnight as risk sentiment faltered following news that two U.S. regional banks had disclosed significant loan losses. The credit concerns sparked a flight to safety, weighing on equities and risk-sensitive currencies into the close of the New York session.
The Dow Jones fell -0.8%, S&P 500 -0.7%, and Nasdaq -0.8%, while U.S. 10-year yields slipped 6bps to 3.97% and Brent Crude fell 1.3% to $61/bbl.
The AUD/USD traded in a 0.6472–0.6516 range, settling near 0.6480. The currency came under pressure during the local session following weaker-than-expected employment data, with key support now eyed ahead of 0.6420. Asian equities finished their session mixed, with Japan’s Nikkei posting strong gains. In contrast, European markets managed to hold and extend gains late in their session, bucking the negative sentiment from the U.S.

  • AUD/USD slipped to lows of $0.6479 after Australia’s employment growth missed expectations (+14.9k vs. +20k exp.) and the unemployment rate rose to 4.5%.
  • EUR/USD climbed to a high of 1.1693, while risk-off flows saw USD/CAD rise to 1.4061.
  • U.S. data was mixed; the Philly Fed Business Outlook for October fell sharply to -12.8, while the NAHB Housing Market Index beat forecasts.
  • The primary driver for the downturn was credit concerns after two regional U.S. banks reported significant loan losses, causing the VIX volatility index to spike 16.7%.

Focus today turns to sentiment surrounding U.S. banks, with U.S. Building Permits and Housing Starts data also due for release.
