Ceasefire Hopes Lift Risk Sentiment, USD Volatile
Markets turned higher late in the session as reports of a potential one-month ceasefire in the Middle East boosted overall risk sentiment. The US dollar initially strengthened amid escalating geopolitical tensions and rising bond yields, but later gave back those gains as optimism around peace talks improved market confidence. Commodity-linked currencies such as the Australian dollar rebounded, while the Japanese yen remained weak, keeping USD/JPY elevated near its highs.
The US dollar index moved within a firm range, while the Australian dollar traded between recent lows and highs before settling slightly below the upper end. The euro and British pound both strengthened earlier in the session before easing as trading progressed. Meanwhile, the New Zealand dollar also saw a modest recovery, and USD/JPY remained supported at elevated levels.
Overall, the US dollar gained traction earlier due to geopolitical risks but softened later as ceasefire discussions lifted sentiment. The Australian dollar found support near its recent lows, with resistance still seen at higher levels, while the Japanese yen continued to underperform despite softer inflation data out of Japan.
