AUD Supported by Commodity Strength as Global Risk Sentiment Stabilises
The Australian dollar remained firm above the 0.7200 level as improving global risk appetite and resilient commodity prices continued to support sentiment toward resource-linked currencies. Investors have grown more optimistic that global growth momentum can withstand ongoing geopolitical tensions, while commodity markets have stayed underpinned by strong demand for gold, copper, and energy products. Westpac’s latest commodity outlook noted that its broad commodities index has risen sharply since late 2025, with upgrades to forecasts for gold, copper, nickel, and oil prices reflecting continued supply constraints and elevated geopolitical risks.
Meanwhile, broader market sentiment improved as easing fears over an escalation in Middle East tensions helped equities stabilise and reduced demand for the U.S. dollar as a defensive asset. J.P. Morgan Asset Management noted that lower oil price volatility and renewed confidence in global growth have encouraged investors back into higher-beta assets, particularly technology and cyclical sectors. In Australia, labour market resilience has also remained a key support for the domestic outlook, with demand for skilled workers across infrastructure, healthcare, and technology sectors continuing to underpin economic activity despite higher interest rates and persistent inflation pressures.
