AUD: Holds Near Highs as Markets Await Key Inflation Data
The Australian dollar remained resilient, trading near the upper end of its recent range as global risk sentiment stayed positive. U.S. yields edged higher, while softer U.S. PMI data kept currency markets largely range-bound. European data briefly pressured EUR and GBP before modest rebounds into the close.

General Market

Wall Street

  • Dow Jones: +0.9% | 49,433
  • S&P 500: +0.5% | 6,936
  • Nasdaq: +0.6% | 23,538
U.S. equities remained firm into the close. U.S. 10-year yields edged higher to 4.18%, while WTI crude rose 0.7% at the open but Brent finished weaker on the day.

Asia-Pacific

  • Shanghai Comp: +1.5% | 4,084
  • Nikkei: +1.3% | 52,518
  • ASX 200: -0.5% | 8,683
Asia saw broad gains, though Australia underperformed as utilities and consumer staples led declines.

Europe

  • FTSE: +1.2% | 10,123
  • DAX:+0.1% | 24,892
  • CAC: +0.3% | 8,237
European markets finished positive despite earlier mixed trade. German preliminary CPI came in below expectations, with Bund yields falling to 2.84%.

Headlines to Watch

  • Australia: Monthly CPI takes centre stage as the expanded report now provides a full inflation picture. Markets look for a trimmed mean of 3.2%, which could support pricing for a potential 9bp RBA hike at the Feb 3 meeting.
  • United States: Soft December PMI prints keep rate expectations in focus as yields grind higher.
  • Europe/UK: Below-forecast German CPI and muted reaction in EUR/GBP highlight limited conviction in FX despite easing inflation signals.
